Strong themes of gender and race are prevalent in this novel and shape the characters actions, I believe. Like you, there were times I loathed Mary, but as the novel continued I began to pity her and understood why she acted the way she did. Since posting that initial post I have come to some of my own conclusions and I disagree with a couple of your points.
